REBIRTH OF
THE CRESCENT CITY
NEW VOICE CLUB
As many of you know, Hurricane Katrina caused a great catastrophe here in New Orleans when the levees
broke. Many members of the Crescent City New Voice Club, have been displaced from their homes, and many of our
Doctors and Speech Therapists, have left the city, because of the closing of hospitals, and the loss of jobs. It
is my quest, to seek out and find our "lost" members, and to find our "new" Laryngectomees, so that we can rebuild our
club, continue our mission of visiting new patients and their families, speaking at schools and organizations about the
dangers of smoking, educating our new Speech Therapist, educating our police, firemen and emergency response teams about Laryngectomees
and the unique way that we breath through our stoma's.
Jewell Hoffman - Past President CCNVC
The Purpose of The Crescent City New Voice Club
1) The most important purpose of the organization is to
inform laryngectomees of the literature and support groups that are available to assist the recovering laryngectomee and their
family, and to give support and encouragement.
2) To stimulate, support and improve relations among
persons who have lost their natural voice due to the removal of the larynx because of cancer or other reasons.
3) To encourage and maintain an exchange of ideas and methods
of communication for the total rehabilitation of the laryngectomee.
4) To provide visitation services to persons who are candidates
for, or have had a laryngectomy.
5) To disseminate information to physicians, business and
professional people who are in a position to assist in the rehabilitation of laryngectomees.
6) To loan devices that will assist laryngectomees to communicate
after surgery.
7) To cooperate with the American Cancer Society and/or
other cancer-fighting organizations in the overall fight against cancer. To publicize, distribute information and provide
speakers to educate the public concerning the dangers of smoking and the causes of cancer of the larynx.

HISTORY
The Crescent City New Voice Club, has been in existence for over 35 years,
supporting the total rehabilitation of Laryngectomees. We are a member of the International Association of
Laryngectomees (IAL) and we are associated with the New Orleans branch of the American Cancer Society.
The Crescent City New Voice Club has sponsored and run two very
successful IAL Meeting/Voice Institutes, with over 500 in attendance at both meetings. As a past President of the CCNVC,
and as Co-Chair and Chair of both IAL Meetings, it is of great importance to me to rebuild our club.
When a local club runs a meeting, there are many benifits to area Laryngectomees, Speech Therapists, and ENT's. My
hope is to rebuild our club, and once again sponsor an IAL meeting. In doing so, we can help to rebuild the support,
and help to educate the new medical professionals, that will resettle the area post Katrina.
The Crescent City New Voice Club will rise again!!

PRAYER
FOR A LARYNGECTOMEE
"O,
Heavenly Father, I thank you for Your
sweet
gift of speech, the second such gift
to
me during my lifetime, and for Your help
through
so many others during my recent and
terrible
silence. Never let me forget the
anguish
nor the despair suffered by me while
speechless,
for only in remembering can I
tenderly
assist those who unfortunately came
after
me. Teach me to do so with a clear
understanding,
a gentle compassion, a deep
humility
and with much patience."
-ANON-

THE SERENITY PRAYER God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage
to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment
at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I
would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably
happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next. Amen.
